SECTION 2 : Life in the English Colonies 2. Generally they were prevented from owning property. It was considered a serious offense to waste time. Before slaves were actually slaves they were indentured servants. Slaves - Slaves work roles were just the same roles as indentured servants. There was a law that made all indentured servants were turned into slaves which meant they never were to be let free. 1 Work RolesMerchants - Merchants work roles were they brought in goods the colony needed and sold what the colony produced. Women did not have the right to vote and could not participate in government. Religion - One of the most important influences on colonial life was religion. Yet some colonial governments did allow women to own property, inherit money, and hold licenses to operate businesses. In some colonies, the religious leaders were also the government leaders.
