the old man and the sea
The Old Man and the Sea was written by Earnest Hemmingway and to be honest the only reason I read it was because it was only 89 pages long. As I'm sure you can guess, the book is about and old man and the sea. The man hasn't caught a fish in 84 straight days, and one day he finally does. The story takes place in Cuba and the Gulf Stream, the main spot the old man fishes and is based on a true story. This is not commercial fishing, the old man fishes in a tiny boat with his bare hands. Not bass fishing, we're talking about 1500 lb. marlin and swordfish, which is difficult today with advanced technology, let alone doing it bare-handed.There are only 3 characters to this story. The old man, Santiago, who is still strong for his age and used to be a great fisherman. He perseveres through his problems, always being and optimist. The boy, Manolin, who used to fish with Santiago. The boy does not like to see the old man suffering and not catching any fish. The final character is the marlin that Santiago catches. The old man treats the fish like a person, giving i
that doesn't sound like a very good message. Even though my motives for reading the book were not concerned about how much I would like the book, I really did. Even when you succeed, you are still bound to fail miserably. In his mind, he had wasted a wonderful life and a friend as well. He can't help but feel terrible for what he had done. To kill the fish, he thrust a harpoon through its heart, finally succeeding and catching the biggest fish he'd ever seen. In my opinion, I don't think this book really has a message. The first shark took a bite out of the fish, then the old man stabbed it in the head with a knife attached to an oar, killing it. If it does, it's a terribly sad one. The shark opened a gaping wound in the fish, spilling more blood, drawing more sharks. Little did he know that the fish would drag him out to sea for 3 days before he jumped. In the end, the old man returns home, just as he did every time he came home empty handed. There is a main conflict to this book, the struggle between the old man and the fish, which is the bulk of the book. When the old man catches the fish, he has no idea what he's up against, he only wishes that the fish would jump so he could see how big it was.
