Broad sheet vs tabloid news paper standard english
A comparison between 'The Times' and 'The Sun' newspapers and the use of the English language:This is a comparison between the two newspapers 'The Times' and 'The Sun'. The Times newspaper is quite large and bulky, has more supplement newspapers including, sports, business, money, travel, health edition and weekend review. There are four more additional newspapers.'The Sun' newspaper is a standard size and not bulky with a small sports supplement, TV guide and lots of advertisements. The layout of 'The Times' newspaper is professional, detailed and uses the English vocabulary effectively and efficiently. The impression I got was that this is an educational newspaper covering a wide selection of topics and provides news locally as well as internationally. At the foot of the front page is displayed the contents with the page numbers of the newspaper. I found the supplements very detailed and targeted specific areas and people. The writers are specific in the information they provide and appear to be knowledgeable in their content. In the following quote ' Mr Bigley was probably sold for up to $250,000(L150,000) to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi by those who seized him, but no amount of money would buy his freedom, Canon Andrew W
The supplementary newspapers are as follows: The Business and Leisure; The Magazine; Weekend Review; Body and Soul and The Eye. There is a lot of information to read through in one day and the magazine is suitable for reading at leisure as they are very detailed. The sport supplement has sixteen pages of coverage. ' On each page of 'The Times' newspaper, the advertisements and images used are selective and specific in relation to the contents of the relevant article. The colourful photos and images have been used to make an impact rather than the writing content. The wording on the cover and in the headlines of the newspaper targets a variety of people with an interest in some news but mainly glamour and gossip. The newspaper is printed in bright red at the top with two distinctive pictures of a singer and the Cd offered. I do not like to read the gossips, and what people do in their personal lives. There are a lot of photos, pictures and adverts in this newspaper, which offer more coverage than the writing itself. An example is on page three in a caption 'Robbie: I wanna bed Abi': - This caption uses slang in the word 'wanna which means 'want to' in the English language. An example is 'purchases spiralling as buyers disappear. 'The Sun' newspaper has seventy-two pages in total. 'The Times' advertises the contents, which are more substantial compared to 'The Sun', which does not advertise any contents apart from the free Cd. The supplementary newspapers and magazines have more pictures to attract the attention of the readers and to promote various topics.
