Media genres
The word 'genre' refers to a particular type or kind of art, music, and writing, drama e.t.c that has certain characteristics that all examples of this type share. Both radio and television can be said to have many broadcasts (programs on radio or on TV) that are identifiable by their various genres.A radio is a piece of electronic equipment that is used to listen to programs that are broadcast; the genres may vary from music and drama to news genres. The two South African radio genres that this essay will discuss are Talk Radio and News Radio. The examples used are from The Given Mkari talk show and standardized radio news, respectively.The Given Mkari talk show is a vibrant talk show broadcasted on Metro FM every weekday from 19h00 - 21h00.This a long period for a talk show, as most talk shows are only one hour or less long. This obviously causes time constraints on issues being discussed. Talk radio is supposed to put emphasis on discussion of policy issues and public affairs. TV genres have two main functions; to attract a desirable audience and to maintain and increase that audience. Contradictory tot its name the program spend more time focusing on other genres instead of nightlife. The acting is melodramatic and there is an emphasis on relationships and intimacy (hence close-up shots) rather than action and current events, which would attract men. By combining different genres it appeals to a huge audience and can therefore be termed 'hybrid'. It has been argued "we (hosts) should not tell people what to do but make people work towards a solution to problems facing them. Another example is when there are celebrations; the clapping of hands can be heard. The other news format used by Y FM is a news program but this is used sparingly as only in tomes of need eg, the national election period FM is not dominated by news as thy are a youth station and are hybrid in order to identify with the youth.
