The Mystery of Andy Warhol
"Warhol was the black hole in space, the vortex that engulfed all, the still epicenter of the psychological storm. He found the key to the motor of the merry-go-round, as the kids on the outside spun faster and faster and, no longer able to hang on, flew off into space,"stated movie star Ultraviolet about her dear friend Andy Warhol. That is clearly what Warhol was, a phenomenon in the world of art, an Einstein of his time, a true genius. Warhol's prints may appear to be nothing more than pleasure to the eye with their bright colors and popular appeal; however, there is much more behind the plastic looking prints of Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor. These views against society point to Warhol's troublesome childhood, which left an imprint on his heart causing him to despise the superficiality of the human race. Warhol's childhood forever haunted him causing Warhol to express himself in his paintings. Although Warhol rarely mentioned anything relating to his childhood what little evidence now remains suggests a drab youth that was marred by hardship, illness, feelings of inferiority, and perhaps worst of all, a total lack of the glamour that meant so much to him in adult life (Bourdon 14). This was an actual painting of Warhol picking his nose. American society may not have changed since Warhol's time, but everyone enjoys his work. De loved the stark outline of the second painting for he explained to Warhol that it symbolized an American, a beautiful form on the outside, but hollow on the inside. Some years after his death, the Andy Warhol Museum was constructed in Warhol's hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Americans would rather look up to a beautiful creature than to one who is an actual hero. She influenced his art tremendously, especially during a particular lunch conversation one afternoon. Andy's skin was permanently damaged and this caused him to fall in love with painting and film for it was a "determatological cure"(Koestenbaum 22). Marilyn hid behind her fame like the print was hidden behind the "happy" and outrageous colors (McShine 10). Warhol enjoyed life as a college student, especially all the new opportunities. From a fame-obsessed outcast, Warhol clearly saw the fallacy behind the masks of perfection in the media (McShine 13). The confidence that De gave Warhol reassured him unlike the negative experiences he encountered throughout his entire childhood (Warhol Hacket 4). Instead of portraying objects with depth using shading, Warhol used flat, solid colors to make the painting appear unreal and plastic looking, furthering his message of how humans lack depth. Fortunately, there was money in the bank, but they owned no car and had to walk to church, school and stores. The after school art classes gave Warhol joy and counteracted the negative effects of the class bullies (Bourdon 17).
