The Key Players of Australian Politics

The key players of Australian Politics are often in the spotlight, on the news, on the radio, even on prime time Logie award winning television shows. They promote their policies to the Australian public in their struggle to get into office. But in their quest for the top job, do they effectively carry out there positions in Australian Politics? The key players of Australian Parliament are The Prime Minister (The Hon. John Howard MP), The Cabinet, The Leader of the Opposition (Mark Latham MP), The Opposition Front Benchers, The Minor Parties, Independents and the Speaker of the House/ President of the Senate. Within our Westminster System they are considered the key players. As they put pressure on each other to govern the country just and fairly, do they do there job? Obviously all of the key players are vital to the Parliament, as there jobs cover the sections of the Parliament and keep things fair but what exactly do they do.The Prime Minister, has the informal role of Head of the Government, his main source of power comes from the ability to dismiss and promote Ministers, he is the face of the Australian Government, and is often in the news and papers. The Prime Minister is expected to be able to provide an explanation or

They ensure that Parliament is conducted according to the Standing Orders and correct Parliamentary practice is followed. This is the same for the Prime Minister, as he is always in the press, radio, TV, and attending conferences and overseas diplomatic trips. The Independents have the rare privilege to be elected to the commonwealth party, they act on the own free will and express there ideas and suggestions within the party more freely than a member bound by Party decree, They play an important role in a minority government as if the government doesn't keep them happy they can switch their support to the opposition allowing the Government unable to govern. The independents seem to be doing there job well as they don't play and extremely important role in parliament. The Opposition Leader, and the Opposition currently fulfil there role in Parliament extremely well, with the Opposition Leader, Mark Latham, always questioning the government, trying to sway them to change their policies and adding his own parties perspective on the Parliamentary issues. They decide on legislation which can be made to help this problem, or seek a situation to handle or help the problem. The key players effectiveness in there jobs is second to none and we should be great full for what they do for our great nation. The opposition front benchers, appear to be doing there job well, they released an excellent budget response and they focused on other areas that they deemed important or correcting the governments mistakes. However the Major minor parties are doing a terrific job keep the government on their toes, making sure that the legislation introduced is fair for Australia. Some of the major minor parties such as the Democrats, keep Australia fair as they hold an upper hand in the Senate, and can block one sided legislation from the Government if they do give there support. They also approve recommendations for the appointment of judges, ambassadors and heads of government departments and statutory authorities. In the House of Reps, such power is executed to the extent of dismissing a MP from the House, however the President of the Senate does not have this power. The Minor Parties, seem to be doing there jobs at both ends of the scale, it is hard to tell what the small parties actually do as they are barely in the news and don't make there actions public to a point of national recognition. comment on all areas of government activity.
