The night when Dimmesdale stands on the scaffold along with Hester and Pearl, a meteor streaks the night sky with a letter "A. By the rest of the community, they consider the "A" to stand for "Angel," because one of the colonies first settlers had died that night. " Until at moment, Pearl is known as demon, elf, and an absolute mystery to her mother and the rest of Puritan society.
