The Turn of A Screw
The Turn of the Screw is a tale of a women and her struggle to get a grasp on reality. The Governess as she is known in the story is put in charge of taking care of two kids. These kids are named Miles and Flora. While she is caring for these kids she begins to see two people who she believes are the ghosts of Peter Quint and Ms. Jessel. The Governess is positive that these ghosts are after the kids and that she is the only one who can stop these evil presences from destroying the kids. Throughout the story many of the characters exhibit malevolent behavior, evil influence, and insinuated insanity. These qualities seem to be docile at the beginning of the story but play a major role in the outcome near the end. Malevolent behavior is found throughout the story. It is exhibited by nearly every character towards one or even more people. One of the strongest influences seems to be the ghosts' malevolent behavior towards the kids. They seem to want to see that the kids are harmed. They invite them into dangerous situations, like the time that Jessel is on the other side of the lake as Flora. The Governess pointed out Jessel seemed to be inviting Flora to come into the water where she would most likely perish. Another is how
This style of writing allowed you to make the story as grotesque or harmless as you wanted. The Governess also begins to have very scary premonitions about why the ghosts are there. He was able to create suspense by leaving a great deal to the imagination. Like the time that she left her room in the middle of the night, she thought she would see a ghost, and then she saw Peter Quint on the staircase. Insinuated insanity was shown by only a few characters. She also believes that the kids can see these ghosts but can't admit it because Quint and Jessel won't let them. But with these characters it was shown a great deal. They also show how nearly all of the characters where disturbed in more than one way. Miles seemed to have an evil influence on Flora. She also talks about how she wishes that they would go away and never come back. Quint seemed to have an effect on Miles' attitude towards the Governess. Henry James did an excellent job of creating a riveting ghost story in a time when not a lot was permitted. It also added many twists that could only be explained if you believe that the characters where a little out of it.
