Animals To Men - Literary Analysis to
When bored at home and all alone one might invite over friends to play a simple game of hide and seek hoping to gain excitement and thrill. Children play for hours, crouching under cabinets, beneath beds, or behind the television. As soon as all the hiding places have been used up, the game becomes too easy. There are no more secret nooks, none that aren't off limits anyways. Children "perfect" the game and can longer reach the natural high they once had therefore leading to breaking the rules by hiding in the forbidden places their parents told them never to step foot in, the attic, the neighbors yard, or inside the dryer. Through characterization, foreshadow, symbols, and irony, Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," opens the readers' eyes to themes about how reaching perfection can lead to grisly acts and how the effects of war are dehumanizing. Characterizations within the story help the reader to see that perfection of hunting can lead to aggression. Richard Connell starts out with a simple character that represents so much about the story. Whitney, the characters name, is who Connell has given the opening line to, says to Rainsford "'Off there to the right- somewhere- is a large island.
Irony throughout the story plays a role in the theme as well. " Chablis is a white wine so this means everything is going good between the two of them and that there are no signs of blood or death for Rainsford if he goes along with Zaroff's game. '" a red bottle of wine, which implies that someone must die, and the General will make sure of it. An additional detail, Connell uses his characters as a way to foreshadow his story. Once he reaches the gap "It was the shore of the sea. we can discuss it over a bottle of Veuve Cliquot,. This goes on to prove my theory that Connell is trying to point out how perfection can lead to one becoming narrow minded. The reader thinks they are lucky for being both hunters, but really they aren't, if they weren't hunters they would not be on a boat ride, passing "Ship-Trap Island", meeting of Zaroff and being hunted would have never happened to Rainsford in the first place. '" Once again he is overlooking the fact that he too is a human being and wouldn't want to be hunted which makes it ironic that he is calling humans, animals of reason. Black is known to be the color of death hence the reason for Connell using is as part of his symbols.
