the old man and the sea
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a story about an old man named Santiago, an expert fisherman, who is down on his luck trying to catch some fish. This story takes place in Havana, Cuba. The book deals with the old man trying to end his streak of bad luck by trying to catch a giant marlin. The old man goes through a long, painful battle against the giant marlin. He also goes through rough times trying to catch this marlin. The old man went eighty-four days without catching a fish. The old man's apprentice, Manolin, was a young boy who was taught to fish by the old man and loved him. Manolin works for a different fisherman because his parents think that the old man has bad luck. They both take a seat on the terrace and the boy buys the old man a beer. All the fishermen make fun of the old man and some of them look at him and feel sad. After a conversation on the terrace the boy helps the old man take his equipment back to his shack up the road. Santiago sticks his spear in the shark's brain and dies after taking a few bites of the marlin. The old man favorite player on the Yankees was Joe DiMaggio. The fish started going more down and then starts to pull the boat with him. The old man is waiting for the fish to jump so he can kill it. He saw them when he was a young fisherman and is now in his dreams alot. When he gets home he goes to sleep. Manonlin tells the old man good luck and then Santiago leaves the haurbour on his boat.
