Even after thousands of years Plato and Socrates teachings are asvalid in today communities as it was in their times. Plato leftus a blueprint etch in stone in becoming an idealistic humanbeing and righteous community. Through Crito, Apology, and theRepublic, Plato reveals that even though the unjust ideals may beenticing it will bring a just happiness. In book VII of The Republic, Socrates speaks with Glauconabout the analogy of "The Cave". This analogy representshumanity as being ignorant and uneducated. Unable toconceptualize or understand beyond what can be seen. People inthe Cave were unable to see anything except the images made thatare cast against the wall which for the most part are false. This is their reality. Socrates teaches that one must realizethe falseness of the shadows and turn to search for the truth. One must question the traditions of the community to seekknowledge. I can relate this to the community I grew up. It wasa community that didn't believe in education as an important toolto success. I would see generation after generation of peoplewho would continue the same blindness and not realizing the truthin knowledge. I was one of the few who wanted more than
Goodness is another characteristic of a perfect philosopherruler. Beauty is a word we use toexpress a feeling that makes us feel good. Iinterpret his analogy has an existence of a higher being whocreate the perfect Forms. However, if he didescape from prison such as Crito suggested the polis would havetaught of Socrates as a hypocrite instead of a great philosopher. Plato states that Goodness is the highest of all theforms. Another theory Plato taught was the Theory of theIdeas/Forms. According to Plato Justice is to a man assharpness is to a knife. This iswhere the four Cardinal Virtues which is Wisdom, Courage,Discipline, and Justice come in play. In the Apology, he was charged of the corruption ofthe Athenians youth by teaching them atheism and corrupting theirminds. Plato uses the analogy of the Sun to explain whatis Goodness. Even though the judges were willing to let him live underthe conditions he would stop practicing philosophy, he stillrefuse these conditions. In the Crito, Socrates teaches us once you disobey the lawyou must be ready to accept the punishment. He teaches that for us to see the Form we must know whatGoodness is. In this existencelay the perfect Beauty, perfect Size, perfect Goodness, etc. I also learned from the Apology thatone should not fear death or treat as a bad thing.
