4 Little Girls
When you first asked what the title meant today I had no idea. I was thinking about how emotional this documentary made me feel. And it hit me. 4 Little Girls, automatically makes me think of young children under the age of seven. Knowing that the documentary is about a bombing that killed young children, it instantly leaves me feeling sad, troubled, and hurting. I have these instant emotions, because they are "little" children. They haven't experienced life and are naive. Because Lee choices this title I think he is looking for that slam of emotions. In our society when victims are "little", our emotions are often mor
Why does he choose to run the family films in the background as the credits role? I wonder if the small print is so you can focus on the families' happiness because the documentary is mostly filled with sorrow. Her description of how she could only feel and not hear is how I have felt at funerals of loved ones, but never knew how to explain it. I noted too that Spike Lee starts out the documentary with a more mellow and somber song about the event and ends it on a more upbeat version of the event. It is a tear jerking part of the documentary. The bombing sounds and knife slashing made those scenes much more intense and striking. The movie really hit home when Addie Collins' sister was talking about the funeral and the calming presence of Martin Luther King. Why does a person's age effect how sad people feel is what I'd like to know? Killing is killing, regardless! The sounds and music of the film made you feel like you were actually in Birmingham. And why the white print? Other than it's a contrasting color. The ending of this documentary is curious to me. I truly loved the clarinet playing in the background when they were speaking about Carol Robertson. People tend not to feel so saddened if people are older when they are killed. I feel this symbolizes the tragedy that came to these families and how they overcame the tragedy to live happier, freeier lives. If the audience had known the "little" girls were teenagers, I don't feel the documentary would have had the same emotional impact.
