Stonehenge
Ancient observatories played a major role in the shaping of our society around the world. For my observatory, I choose to research Stonehenge. I didn't research it for the mere fact that it was a widely known observatory but for the fact that it is actually something interesting to me and I looked forward to finding out more about my choice. To begin, Stonehenge is located in Salisbury Plain, England. This is about fifty miles south of London, England. The researchers and historians that have spent countless years trying to find out who really did build Stonehenge still haven't found an answer. Although most people have thought that the Druids were the builders of Stonehen
Stonehenge was used to keep records and predict astronomical events such as eclipses. It also was a good time keeper for them so they were able to figure out what season it was and the time of the year and such. and the stone monument in the center was constructed, arrange, and rearranged over a period of 1000 years from 2500-3500 B. Then, a wooden structure was built into it around 2500 B. ge, it was proven that they arrived in England after work on it had already been completed. Construction of this marvelous site was broken down into three different periods. This site was probably erected for both astronomical and religious purposes. Other sight lines point to the most northerly and southerly risings of the Moon. Some other alignments are related to the rising and setting of the sun at other times of the year. The ancient peoples responsible with the construction of Stonehenge were very aware of the movement of the celestial bodies and that Stonehenge is some form of ancient calendar. The people that actually built the site brought stones the whole way from the Prescelly mountains in Pembrokeshire, Wales nearly 100 miles away! The stones had to also be dragged along an 80 mile detour route to get them to their present location.
