From a humanitarian standpoint, it is necessary to understand other people and their views in order to fully understand one's self and the broader perspective of societies in the world. The pope has realized this, and rather than seek to discriminate against or even alienate people based on religion, the new focus is, according to the pope himself, to "respect mankind's right to enjoy fundamental freedoms", and from that approach, seek to understand how religion can help people get in touch with their spirituality. The simple fact remains that catholicism is not the sole religion in the world. It is the responsibility of religion to help humanity gain a sense of purpose, identity, direction and hope, amidst current world conditions. Additionally, Catholicism's association with politics in the past has dealt a sharp blow to the credibility of it's teachings, helping to further propel people's search for a less 'corrupt' way of finding salvation, and understanding their purpose in life. The church has realized that it needs to make a greater effort to communicate with and understand the position and role of other faiths, based on the fact that other beliefs evolve from different texts but essentially the same philosophies. As such, it would be to the benefit of the Catholic Church to use this opportunity to reach people through the idea of achieving similar, if not the same goals that other religions have for their followers. The application of philosophy and philosophical discussions to religion, its study and practice is crucial in the attaining and retaining of the loss of humanity to worldly desires. Also, the various philospohies from which religions developed can be analysed, and a better understanding of how and why various religions came into being In essence, as people of the modern civilized world, it is necessary to incorporate religion into the curriculum to simply keep up with the changes in perspective, worldwide, particularly with those of the church, and to be able to maintain that overall sense of looking out for humanity. It has the capacity to be the vessel through which many issues involving differences among people and their religions can be resolved. Given that colleges do not discriminate according to religious belief, they are forums in which the various similarities, differences and ideas can be facilitated to further the aims of the church. The church still has a very pivotal role, based on the fact that it is still one of the oldest and most important religions in the world, and has managed to remain one of the most respected.
