Temptation and Medieval Literature

             As time passes there are always aspects of a society that tends to change. Throughout different generations people might act a little differently and there are different standards that one must follow. For example, some of the clothes that people wear today would not be acceptable in the 1950's. Also, the music is quite different and the manner in which people act in general varies from that time period. Even with all these changes there is one chacertistic of humans that we can see today and history has seen since time has began. This would be temptation.
             Temptation is described as "the act of tempting or the state of being tempted especially to evil." (Merriam-Webster) This word originated in the 13th century, which is stated in the Merriam-Webster's dictionary. However, I believe that even though there may not have been a particular word for temptation before the 13th century people were still tempted. I believe that temptation came about as soon as time began. Many believe that the first humans who walked the earth, Adam and Eve, went through the test of temptation. Adam and Eve, as the story goes, disobeyed God by eating the forbidden apple. If this is true and they were tempted by Satan, as stated in this traditional story, then the temptation was too great and they were unable to control their desire for power and greed.
             The Lord's Prayer, recited by Christians all over the world, has within its body the plea, "and lead us not into temptation." Clearly, many people feel that temptation can be so strong that they may not be able to resist it. Human beings are often weak, so they ask their God to keep them out of situations and places in which temptation awaits them. In other words, resisting temptation might require super human strength id not divine aid and intervention.
