Temptation and Medieval Literature
As time passes there are always aspects of a society that tends to change. Throughout different generations people might act a little differently and there are different standards that one must follow. For example, some of the clothes that people wear today would not be acceptable in the 1950's. Also, the music is quite different and the manner in which people act in general varies from that time period. Even with all these changes there is one chacertistic of humans that we can see today and history has seen since time has began. This would be temptation. Temptation is described as "the act of tempting or the state of being tempted especially to evil." (Merriam-Webster) This word originated in the 13th century, which is stated in the Merriam-Webster's dictionary. However, I believe that even though there may not have been a particular word for temptation before the 13th century people were still tempted. I believe that temptation came about as soon as time began. Many believe that the first humans who walked the earth, Adam and Eve, went through the test of temptation. Adam and Eve, as the story goes, disobeyed God by eating the forbidden apple. If this is true and they were tempted by Satan, as stated in this traditional story
His temptation to be with women puts him off track in his journey. This story involves a woman who is very large in size. He is very bitter so he tells his tale. Medieval people may not have had the drugs that we have today, but food and drink were certainly a strong temptation for them. This is a story of a man named Piers, or sometimes known as Will, who goes on a pilgrimage for forty years. We can see temptation clearly in this story. It seemed that she was determined to be with a man no matter what. It appears that Lady Bertilak she wants him to get in trouble with Lord Bertilak and also wants him to put his strong Christian morality aside while they have an affair. She had gray eyes and a gap in her tooth, which meant that she was promiscuous. This was just as true of medieval writers, such as Chaucer, Langland and the Gawain poet, as it is of our modern authors today. May decides that he will meet Damien in the garden because January has lost his vision! He has eyes but cannot see. It turns out that he is not really going to get married. They are very tempted by the feeling of carefree bliss.
