Proctor's Problem

Throughout the history and evolution of man, the human mind has progressed in ways that no other species has ever experienced. Beginning with the development of fire, to the feudal age, through the enlightenment and the revolutions, and coming now into the era of technology, humans have developed into the dominant species on this earth. However, people have been forever plagued by human nature and human flaws. There are certain emotions that human brains feel that are natural, and are therefore unexplainable. Although humans are the only species of animal to civilize and to have a recorded history, they are also the only species to wage war and kill unjustifiably. Men experience things such as hate, revenge and lust, things that drive us to do things that hurt us as a civilization. No one can escape these things though, no matter how hard they try. . . .

I have made a bell of my honor! I have rung the the doom of my good name. Again, however, John’s weaknesses prove to take control of him. When his friends, who were going to die with him are brought out of prison to watch his admittance, he realizes what he is doing is wrong. John cannot be blamed for his primal feelings of lust or his fear of public humiliation, and most of all of his dread of death. One of Elizabeth’s many weaknesses is her affair with John; if he could only prove that she is an adulteress, her word might be doubted. However, his human nature, and the the decisions that he makes are human. In the end his conscience takes control and after he does, he regrets it, for although he confessed, which is good, he ruined his wife’s trust. He goes from sinner to saint, but it is never really wrong, and it is never really right. Although he started out as a sinner by taking Abigail to bed, he redeemed himself by becoming a saint, and dying for the cause of proving the town accusers wrong.

In the town, Abigail’s word is held very high, for she has seen the devil, and is now being a good Christian and trying to be with God again, therefore revealing who else has interactions with Lucifer. This weakness of John’s is what spurs Abigail to go crazy for love, and declare Elizabeth a witch.
