The boulevards were like all the other streets, brilliantly illuminated, with immensenumbers of people walking up and down on this late February evening. Men, women, andchildren were rejoicing, as the terrible struggles of the day had ceased. Near the Hotel desCapucines there was a heavy force of military troops, who’’s main purpose seemed to bedirecting traffic. All was tranquil for some time; presently a column of unarmed studentsand artisans marched down the boulevard singing. Suddenly a shot echoed throughout thecity, an entire squadron of troops charged the crowd with muskets blazing and swordsdrawn. Percy B. St John was an eyewitness to the events herein described; the followingwas taken from his notes compiled at the time. ““The sight was awful. Husbands wereseen dragging their fainting wives from the massacre; fathers snatching up their children,with pale faces and clenched teeth, hurried away to put their young ones in safety, andthen to come out in arms against the monarchy. Women clung to railings, trees, or to awall, or fell fainting on the stones…… Afterwards Utter strangers would be seen shakinghands and congratulating one another on their escap
4 Financial problems in the year 1788proved to be a trying time for all. After persuasion by the nobility,they converted themselves into The National Assembly in June 17, 1789. The storming of theBastille’’s was carried out by the peasants. It also signified the start of the Le GrandePeur. Louis XVI did not take advantage of this situation to introduce reformsand gain the support of the people. He should also never haveallowed himself to call the Estates-General. Although he does not delve into the politics or causes behind the Revolution,he does give the reader a unique opportunity to explore the thoughts and opinions of thecommon people living in France, as told in the first person perspective. France proceeded deeper and deeperinto debt as bad crops and famine contributed to unrest. There have beennumerous books written about the French Revolution, not surprisingly since it’’s still oneof the most controversial events in modern history.
