The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards in Belfast, Ireland. She was the second in a trio of the “Olympic Class” of ships. Olympic was the first, followed by Titanic, and then came Gigantic that was later named Britannic.
Titanic was launched on May 31st 1911 to a crowd of well wishers. Since it was uncustomary for the Whit Star Line to christen their ships, there was no formal ceremony. After 62 seconds she slid down to the River Lagan and on her way to the fitting out basin.
