Titanic

On April 10th 1912, 2,228 people set off aboard the RMS Titanic to arrive in America, some hoped to start a new life in a new country, while others were just off for a good vacation. The Titanic’s dimensions were: length-882.5 feet long, height-175 feet, beam-92.5 feet, draft- 59.5 feet, propellers-3, 1 center, 16 feet in diameter, 2 wings, 23 feet in diameter. Boilers- 29 in all, top speed- 25 knots, there were four funnels only three were needed but they added a fourth one to make her look more powerful and fast.

The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards in Belfast, Ireland. She was the second in a trio of the “Olympic Class” of ships. Olympic was the first, followed by Titanic, and then came Gigantic that was later named Britannic.

Titanic was launched on May 31st 1911 to a crowd of well wishers. Since it was uncustomary for the Whit Star Line to christen their ships, there was no formal ceremony. After 62 seconds she slid down to the River Lagan and on her way to the fitting out basin.

It was the fifth day at sea for the RMS Titanic. It has also been said that if the Titanic have hit the iceberg head-on instead of to the side, there would have been less damage. It has been said that the Californian could have saved the people of the Titanic because they saw the flares and they watched the ship go down.

The Carpathia soon came to rescue the survivors that were in the lifeboats.

At about 11:40pm, the passengers could hear the crow’s nest bell being rung three times, along with Frederick Fleet screaming his immortal words “Iceberg, right ahead!” About 30 seconds later, the Titanic hit an iceberg.
