The Once and Future King
Almost everyone has at least heard of King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Many even know of Sir Lancelot and Lady Guenever, and their betrayal of Arthur. Few however have even heard mention of Sir Galahad, Mordred, or Morgause. All of these characters had important impact on Arthur's life. The novel itself is actually divided into four "books", The Sword in the Stone, The Queen of Air and Darkness, The Ill-made Knight, and The Candle in the Wind. In truth, for the most part, this division has no relevance to this report, except that the first "book" is truly the exposition. Arthur lives with Sir Ector and his son Kay, and is treated as this kind man's own son. Both the boys are taught all the things a young noble boy should know. Hawking, Archery, and Tilting (commonly called jousting) are a few examples. One day while out hawking, Kay improperly prepares to release their prized hawk, Cully, and the raptor flies off into the woods. Arthur knows that Old Hob, the person who cares for their birds, would be heart broken if Cully were not returned, so he heads off into the woods in search of him. Arthur becomes hopelessly lost in the search for Cully, and falls asleep in the forest. In the morning he c
Mordred knows that because Arthur is just, he will not be able to avoid punishing an illegal act (adultery and treason), even if it involves his best friends. Arthur recognizes that he must die and is at peace with this, knowing that his ideas for law and justice will return. The resolution takes place in the final chapter of ¬The Candle in the Wind. This theme is that personal greed and lust leads to the downfall of all that which one cares for. Though he is extremely pious and well-loved and skilled at his work, he feels a vague self-hatred which is never explained. Soon after he comes to court, he falls in love with Arthur's wife, Guenever. Listening to the sounds of warfare outside, he brings in a young boy and tells him his story, so that it will not be forgotten. Lancelot and Guenever become a priest and nun, and Mordred is killed. Lancelot is Arthur's best friend and best knight, and Queen Guenever's lover. Many young knights love the idea and admire Arthur. Many minor characters have a profound impact on Arthur's life. "There are many characters in the novel, all of which have an important role in the shaping of Arthur's outlook, and eventual downfall. Arthur leaves the castle, forced to fight Lancelot in France, and Mordred convinces the public he is dead, forcing Guenever to accept his marriage proposal. Gawaine swears he will never forgive Lancelot and makes sure Arthur will not either.
