The Truman Show

In the movie, The Truman Show, the main character, Truman, experiences neurosis. This is a result of his ideal self and real self being too different. He could no longer function in the fictitious environment created for him and he had to escape. The world of politeness, responsibility, The difference between Truman's ideal self and his real self are the main reasons that Truman escaped. Ideal self is what society says you should be in terms of your behavior, personality, and feeling. Real self is what you would become if allowed to develop entirely on your own. The society Truman was living in created an ideal self that was polite, didn't question things, trustful, responsible, and calm. His ideal self was shaped around Truman making for good TV, and to assure that Truman didn't try to leave the island. Truman's real self was adventurous

But my real self has a desire to sometimes break the rules and be lazy. , happy, outgoing, and somewhat eccentric. Whenever Truman wanted to leave or displayed behavior that the producer didn't like he was met with conditional positive regard. Both my ideal self and real self are polite, happy, and strive for success. The unconditional positive regard he always received also helped rouse Truman's suspicions that his world was fake. If Truman received encouragement and unconditional positive regard when he told those closest to him that he wanted to leave, he would have been much more likely to leave, thus he never received unconditional positive regard. The differences between Truman's two selves caused him to be unhappy, question things, and eventually escape. My ideal self has no problem with these things, but my real self questions doing all of the work that I don't want to do and questioning and not wanting to obey all of the rules that I'm supposed to obey. My parents, teachers, and friends all show unconditional positive regard whenever I do something that they don't like or approve of. One way that the producer kept Truman on the island was by only providing conditional positive regard; and never allowing his actors to show unconditional positive regard. It can be said that my friends, and teachers still care and approve of me if I do something bad or wrong, but if I were to do something bad enough their approval and concern would prove to be unconditional. When I do something a teacher disapproves of I either receive a bad grade, get reprimanded, or disciplined. Conditional positive regard is the showing of love and affection only when, in this case Truman, did what the actors wanted him to do. My ideal self and real self are somewhat different, but mostly similar. Unconditional positive regard is the showing of love and affection all of the time, regardless of behavior.
