A midwife's Tale Chapter Analysis

             1. The most important things that Martha experiences in this chapter are different types of illnesses, mainly the canker rash. Since the people that she visits all have different types of symptoms she deals with each of her patients in different ways. Many of the ways she treats people involve using natural herbs in the area. Not all of her patients survived but majority of them she healed or in her words "revived." Along with soothing illnesses she dealt with pregnancies as well.
             2. Her responses to these experiences were all the same. She seemed to show little emotion in her writings. This may be because it's her job and she is used to seeing many people get sick and many people die. Her response to people getting sick was giving them some type of herbal remedy that would either ease the pain or cure the sickness. At times when people died she would help prepare the body and then would attend the funeral.
             3. Her responses revealed that the world she lived in was very unhealthy. Many people in the town were becoming ill. The life expectancy was probably very low. Also there was much medical advancement. Doctors were using different methods for helping the sick. Some of which didn't seem to help people and may have been the cause of many deaths. The world in which Martha lived was trying to change for the better.
             1. In this chapter the most important things that Martha experienced was weaving both literally and metaphorically. In the literal sense of weaving, Martha's neighbors taught her girls to weave. Weaving and other domestic activities were very big things among Hallowell women. The finished woven products were often traded and this helped Hallowell's economy. The metaphoric meaning of weaving was the roles of men and women in 18th century society.
