Othello

             A person's character shapes his or her own destiny. Likewise, a person's clear understandings of a crisis and a thought process in a given situation will determine how that person will act or behave. In Othello's case, his inability to judge and clearly understand others shaped his thoughts and behavior. Given Othello's background, as a noble, honest, and high-ranking soldier status in the Venetian society, his strong love to Desdemona is undermined by intense feelings of personal emotion combining with doubt, rage, betrayal and envy. This flawed state of mind in Othello's character creates vulnerability, exposing him to be taken advantage of. At the end, he is consumed by rage and jealousy. Othello's jealousy, impaired judgment, and anger influence his bad behavior, leading to his tragic end.
             Othello's intense love for Desdemona and the struggle he faces as an outsider in the Venetian society are the highlights of his character. His origin inhibits him from understanding European women clearly. The warning of Desdemona's deception toward her father by marrying Othello is the first doubt struck in his fragile mind. In Act1, Scene 3, Desdemona's father, Brabantio, warns Othello by saying, "Look to her, Moor if thou hast eyes to see She has deceived her father, and may thee" (292-293). The suspicions of Desdemona's infidelity grows in Othello's mind, overwhelming his emotion and its effects starts decaying his romantic nature. His companion, Iago, manipulates Othello's mind for revenge of not promoting him as a lieutenant and this takes a toll in Othello's relationship with Desdemona. Despite Othello's strong character, Iago manages to change and control Othello's mind throughout the rest of the play.
