             SAFETY V/S THE ANNOYING CELL PHONE
             Researchers suggest about 140 million people in the United States subscribe to cell phones, and 85% of them use the phone while driving. I did a survey interviewing three drivers concerning using a cell phone while driving. All three interviewees came up with the same straightforward answer; talking on the cell phone while driving could be disastrous. Road rage, other careless drivers, highway construction, traffic signs and signals, the radio, weather conditions and billboard signs already divert a drivers' attention. A cell phone is one distraction that you can avoid because you have control over it. Distracted drivers talking on the cell phone have caused many accidents, some fatal. After an accident, high on the list of questions from a police officer is "Have you been drinking?" Now a new question h as emerged, "Do you have a cell phone, and were you using it at the time of the accident?" With the rise of cell phone usage, my three interviewees agreed that driving while talking on the cell phone is an enormous distraction and should be against the law.
             My first interviewee, Samantha Jones, argued that while using you hand-held cell phone, your ability to drive safely is disturbed. When a driver is dialing or hanging up, he must look away from the road. "Your attention is elsewhere while completing the call," stated Samantha. With hand-held phones, you loose mobility as you juggle the phone. Both your attention and ability to react are impaired. "With both hands not on the wheel, you are not able to react quickly," responded Samantha. If you have to make an emergency stop or swerve suddenly, an accident could occur.
