Effects of smoking
If you don't know by now that smoking causes cancer you may have been hiding under a rock for the past twenty years. The 1982 Surgeon General's Report stated "Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States." (American Cancer Society) Tobacco causes many types of cancer and cigarette use kills half of all continuing smokers. More Americans are killed by cigarettes than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs. Cigarette smoking is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx, oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus and is a contributing cause in the development of cancers of the bladder, pancreas, uterine cervix, kidney, stomach, and some leukemias. What I'm going to mainly focus on in this report is the most common, which is lung cancer.Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both women and men in the United States, Canada, and China. In several other countries, lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in men and the second or third cause in women (Emedicine Health). Cancer of the lungs is responsible for 40% of all lung cancers deaths in the U.S.
Chemotherapy drugs are given intravenously (this means in the veins), by injection or by mouth. The cost of both of the 'treatments' is very high. In surgery: Certain types of lung cancer are treated most effectively by simply removing the tumor surgically. (A cough is the most common symptom of lung cancer. * Stage IV Tumor has spread to other parts of the body. If the disease is detected at an early stage, and the patient is young and healthy, however, the five-year survival rate then increases to 85 percent. This rarely happens and because most people think that it can't and won't happen to them. They are:* Squamous Carcinoma: 40-60% of all cancers (occurs mainly in the large or medium sized bronchi)* Adenocarcinoma: 10-20% of all lung cancers (found mainly in the outer part of the lungs)* Small cell undifferentiated Carcinoma: 10-20% of all lung cancers (sometimes called oat cell, because of how they appear under a microscope)* Large cell undifferentiated 5-20% of all lung cancers (can be found anywhere in the lungs)Survival:The overall survival rate of people with lung cancer is very low. Staging:Staging is a careful attempt to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if it did, what parts of the body are affected. If you are a cheap person, this reason alone will keep you from smoking or even make you want to quit. The person may have a "smoker's cough" that becomes worse over time. Types:There are four main types of lung cancer. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer with drugs that can destroy lung cancer cells by stopping their growth and/or reproduction. By taking the risk of smoking, you should know that in five years with the diagnosis only 10-20% of people survive.
