Play Summary - 'night Mother

Determination drives an individual to accomplish what they have in mind. When that something is suicide, they will often succeed. When someone has suicide in their mind, they cannot see themselves in the future and will take their own life. Jessie is a character in " 'night, Mother, " by Marsha Norman that experiences this thought process. She is a helpless middle-aged woman living with her mother, who has given up on life and takes control of it in her own way.
Suicide can be prevented in some cases, through the help of peers, family members or psychological help. It all depends on how serious the individual is and how depressed they are. Depression is a disease that will take over ones physical and emotional stamina. An individual can get to this point, where they see no way out and believe they only way they can achieve happiness is by committing suicide. Like Jessie's character, the time has arrived to take matters into her own hands and end her misery. The play takes place in her mother's house, Thelma Cates. The reader is introduced to her as Mama, a controlling thickheaded character, who is chatty and nosy (1498). Jessie is described to us as a woman who has only recently gained control of her mind and body, and that tonight she will be determined to hold on to that control (1498). The play opens up, we see Jessie cleaning the house and getting everything in order as if she is preparing for something that we do not know about yet.
"We got any old towels?" Jessie asks her mother (1499). Her mother later replies "Your hair is black enough, hon." (1499). From just a few lines into the play, most readers would get the idea that Jessie is preparing to dye her hair. Within five minutes of the play, however, any audience would be shocked to see that Jessie plans to kill herself. Jessie bluntly tells her Mama, "The gun is for me. I'm going to kill myself, Mama." (1501). ...
