Due to asbestos related illnesses, do not surface until 10 to 50 years after exposure, Georgia-Pacific forecast an additional 246,000 claims. During 2003, Georgia-Pacific's asbestos litigation continued to be closely monitored by the public and media. Over 65% of Georgia-Pacific's raw building materials are processed in the United States. Georgia-Pacific has made efficient use of its resources, and maintained a strong customer base. Trademark InfringementBackgroundThe Playtex Products Company has filed a lawsuit against Georgia-Pacific for trademark infringement. Anticipating and prevention of accidents is a key to a safe work place. The trademark infringement is based on Georgia-Pacific copied Playtex brand name. However, investors started to get restless near the end of 2002, after a string of asbestos-related verdicts emerged against other defendants. Playtex wants Georgia-Pacific to discontinue the use of its product line, and pay for the settlement. ResultGeorgia-Pacific motion for summary judgment was granted. The building products manufacturing segment includes Georgia-Pacific's structural panels, gypsum, lumber, industrial wood products. (See pictures) Therefore, this demand has forced Georgia-Pacific to expand their manufacturing facilities. Occupational Safety and Health Administration FinesDeath of EmployeesThe deaths of two workers from exposure of high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas at a Pennington, Alabama paper mill has resulted in a $91,000 fine per death, against Georgia-Pacific, by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Asbestos litigation was costing the company more than expected.
