Hitting the Books

If you asked a typical high school student what their least favorite part of school is, they could tell you in a heartbeat that there is one specific area in which every one loathes. It is the most dreaded thing in the world and by far hardest thing that takes place during the day. It will never be fun and is deemed useless other than for the purpose of making teenagers suffer. This horrible and twisted event that I am referring to is homework. Homework is assigned almost daily in high school yet it is the hardest thing to get used to. In the eyes of the average high school student, it is the worst part of their academic career, but as much as I hate to admit it, homework is an extremely valuable learning tool and there are a lot of positive sides to it. Homework allows students to study and learn at their own pace and in the comfort of their own home. There is by far less pressure on them while working at home than in comparison to working in a classroom. No one is ever put on the spot to complete an assignment in a set period of time in your bedroom or living room while studying. There are fewer disruptions in the controlled environment of the home than in the classroom allowing students to be more comfortable in gen

One downside to homework is that students are unable to consult with a teacher if they come upon a question or problem. If college bound students do not develop these skills early in life, they will be in big trouble when they leave home and are forced to cope with school, work, homework, and recreation all on their own. In such subjects as English or Social Studies, students are able to develop more confidence in their reading, writing, and study skills while completing their assignments at home. I have always found that the best side of homework in such subjects as math or science is learning how to solve complex problems that perhaps you did not understand in class, and being able to do so at your own level with no pressure. Students who find that they are overwhelmed by homework may find themselves in a sticky situation. It is really incredible how much better I study or read for content after completing a few text book assignments at home. You eventually learn to teach yourself new skills or information using the data that you already retain. At the same time, having a though year with homework can and will teach these skills of adapting with busy schedules. If given the right amount, students will grow stronger academically and socially because they will learn to allot time for fun. Being capable of weighting the importance of certain activities, assignments and classes are developed, which is key to making it as an adult in the real world. The best example of this is seen in the average social studies book assignment. Do I put it off for another day, stay up all night completing it, or simply not do it? I feel that life skills are developed within those who are willing to try to do the right thing. Too much homework is most certainly a bad thing and in more ways than one. This is of course worst case scenario but it gives you an example of how bad homework really can be if assigned too much of it.
