The differing beliefs and perceptions of the mentally ill between the sexesThis research highlights the favored distance in society between the mentally ill and the able minded. It considers youth's views on mental illness; weather it is psychosocial or medical, it also focuses on the differing opinions of males and females. A vignette style questionnaire was used to collect data, illustrating correlations between the level of perceived mental illness and the larger gap society places between themselves and the mentally ill and a females show a more tolerant acceptance of the mentally ill. It has been suggested however that the preferred distance placed between the mentally ill and society would be considerably decreased if society were more or better educated about the mentally ill. This research attempts to pin point society's attitudes towards the mentally ill, in response to the growing interest in the public's perception based on their awareness of mental illness. The able minded public tends to view the mentally ill as abnormal; they avoid interaction and desire to have a "safe" distance placed between themselves and the mentally ill. Within the inter-actional perspective, it is clear that society has certain attitude
As a result of the small sample size, the correlations do not accurately support previous research; although the idea of females being more positive and tolerant, towards the mentally ill, is present it is not exceedingly overpowering the male's opinions. To test this hypothesis the ratings from question 1 and 2 are calculated and correlated. The hypothesis is tested by correlating these scores. 2 Moderate WeakPsycho-Social Cause (Data C) -0. The idea that mental illness has a psycho-social cause is not considered very significant by females, whilst males believed it to be a key factor. In order to improve this research and obtain more accurate results a larger sample size should be used, along with performing the questionnaire outside the university towards people of all ages and backgrounds. MaterialsThe materials used to conduct this study were an A4 double sided page consisting of instructions and 9 questions relating to a scenario, written at the top of the page, about a man that demonstrates signs of "strange" behavior. Based on the results from Table 1 and Table 2 it is seen that females believed that the physical cause of mental illness is influential, whilst males tend to believe that it is not a notable factor.
