Experience Overcome
The judges were ready; my heart started racing. My nerves rose up and spread like fire throughout my body while I watched-while I waited. Stomach hurt. All those butterflies clashed and crowded together. They came every time that I performed-it never failed. There was so much noise-talking, yelling, whistling, cheering. Couldn't think. My body shook and screamed from the tension. Heart pounding, nerves tingling, every muscle contracted. Stop. Focus. Deep breath and close everything out. I shut my eyes and the turbulent world in which I was submerged went black and silent. My director said, "visualize the drill".This season was my fourth year that I had been in marching band, even though I did participate in middle school. I had been selected to be drum major my junior year, although I was majorette for two years now. I was excited to meet the challenge of University Interscholastic League competitions and the National Association of Military Marching Band Competition(NAMMB), in which we had never participated in before. It was also nerve-racking because I felt that if we didn't do as well as other years, it would be my fault. As it turned out, this year our band would adopt its slogan, its mission statement: It takes the best
Finally came the moment for which we had all been suspensefully waiting: "The Best in Class winner of the II-A field show" (the main portion of the competition), "Union Grove High School". Yochum 4During this season, I learned what it meant to lead the Union Grove High School Marching Band. During this time the day went into super slow-motion. I mastered the forward and reverse rotation and my nod to the judges. Plus we received grades of one from every judge, which meant we had won sweepstakes eleven years in a row. Two weeks before school even started, the Union Grove High School Sweepstakes Band began its march to the competitions. and went for two hours every day, working on music and marching. The cheers from the crowd bounced off the back of my ears as the natural high of trumpets, the smoothness of the saxophones, and the great bottom line by the low brass echoed back. Overwhelmed by excitement, our band celebrated drastically. Now I know that I am a leader, I use that in my day-to-day experiences. The boom-boom of the bass drum was totally in sync with its snare counterpart while the woodwinds blew up a storm. Our band contained Yochum 2about eighty members, the largest it has ever been, and our sound was as stunning as a professional orchestra. The freshly cut football field folded under each step of my fellow drum majors and myself. Later that year we went on to participate at NAMMB, where we took Best in Class and received all ones again.
