Does Shakespeare make Hamlet's delay and the consequences believable?Shakespeare's play Hamlet revolves around revenge, murder and foul play. In act I, scene v, 25 to 31, Hamlet meets his father's ghost the former king of Denmark, concerning the foul play of his murder. The ghost commands Hamlet to take revenge, yet at the end Act III scene iii Hamlet still has not taken revenge on Claudius, the brother of his father as well as him Stepfather. I think that the delay is due to the behavior of different characters, the situation and other external obstacles, which I will try to discuss in this essay.Throughout the play, Hamlet presents himself as a little crazy because he wants to hide what he planning to do. His mother Gertrude suspects that her son Hamlet is insane due to the fact that she married her husband's brother. She feels extremely guilty about the situation and takes it for granted when Polonius claims that Hamlet is crazy because of his daughter Ophelia. I think Gertrude is a huge obstacle to Hamlet since she is the only person left in his family, and therefore it is very hard for him to put forth his actions. It is difficult for Hamlet to take revenge on Claudius without his mother being hurt. His fathers ghost in
Finally, in lines 551 to 556, Hamlet reveals that he is scared of taking revenge on Claudius because he doubts the existence of the ghost. Hamlet was not able to murder Claudius right then because once one has confessed their sins to God, they would forgive them and would go to heaven. Hamlet has already put forth a plan and is about to kill Claudius. Because Hamlet does not trust the ghost that he is his father it leads to a delay. Since religion and belief plays a big part within the Elizabethan times, Shakespeare made it very believable. Which, Hamlet's father was not able to do. It is the lack of self-confidence and lack in trust. Hamlet organizes a play which portraits the death of Hamlet's Father the former King of Denmark, who was poisoned by his brother Claudius. When Polonius is talking to Hamlet, Polonius is confused about what Hamlet is saying to him, but when Polonius exits, Hamlet says "These tedious old fools!" Act II, scene ii, 212. The next act and scene where we find out more about Hamlet's delay for taking action is in Act II scene ii. Hamlet wants to murder Claudius while he is doing something bad so that he would go to hell. In line 502, he criticizes himself by saying "O what a rogue and peasant slave am I!" Hamlet starts to dislike his acts since he cannot put forth what he is supposed to do and he feels ashamed that he cannot do it. This shows us that he is not sure if the ghost is the devil, who is telling him lies to lead him to commit a sin and therefore end in hell. I certainly would have doubted the existence of the ghost since in those times ghosts were not very known and often talked about. With that, statement it makes it makes it even harder for Hamlet to take his actions.
