Could We Afford the News to be Biased?
Imagine, you have a beautiful daughter, so young with a bright future ahead of her, now imagine her kidnapped. You are overcomed with terror because months go by with no leads and you are desperately helpless having seeked every resource available. Your daughter is one of the thousands that the news did not chose to cover with compassion. Now in reality, a Caucasian pregnant woman vanishes. Finally after months of continuous coverage in the local and primetime news, a shocking discovery occurs when her tattered body washes ashore in the San Francisco Bay. Suspicion now swirls around her cheating husband. The case of Laci Peterson was a blockbuster media story that mesmerized the nation's attention in part because she was an ideal innocent, white woman who seemed to have it all. Unfortunately this tragic story also belongs to a Evelyn Hernandez. Her case barely had any mention in the Bay Area news while Laci Peterson's not only had coverage at the top of every hour in local news but throughout the nation. One difference, Evelyn Hernandez was Hispanic. Race should not be the determining factor to place a Caucasian woman with a higher priority after what these two women had endured. If cases were dealt with half of the respect of Peterson's case more missing persons should be found and more families would not feel so helpless in the effort to find their loved ones. Although missing Caucasian persons give higher ratings to the news media in return the cases gets plenty of leads to solve the case, the sole purpose of the news media is to inform to benefit the community of diverse ethnicities. Therefore, daily local newscasts and newspapers need to cover stories of missing people in their own community to aid police in a public effort instead of giving the time to high profile cases which would help give clues to crack cases, instead of laying it in obscurity.
