Mistreatment of Native American by the English |

Native Americans were mistreated by the English. Because the new settlers of America believed that land would benefit them greatly with a new life and new settlement. The Native Americans were driven off there land, they became slaves for New England, they were forced to choose a religion and they had social mistreatment. Settlers coming to America had many negative images of Native Americans. In 1502, Sebastian Cabot began parading around three Eskimos that he had kidnapped on an Arctic voyage. These Eskimos were described as "flesh-eating savages" and "brute beasts" that had a language they spoke in which no one could understand. Amerigo Vespucci stated that, "these Native Americans were, brutal, loathsome half men, who lived with out law, religion, rulers, immortality of the soul, and private property." More and more settlers began settling up the rivers that flowed into the Chesapeake Bay, causing the local tribes to worry about coming in contact with the new settlers. There was a great decline in many tribes, even to the point of extinction. " (29) In Virginia, English population increased. Planters and merchants began hunting down Indians and when they brought back captives, they would be rewarded. Due to the settlers' desire for land and domination, there was widespread destruction of Native Americans. Because of this small war attacks occurred. English knew this would be a problem so they decided to solve the problem by believing that "English settlers did not intend to take Indians' land but wanted only to share it with them. Native Americans had possession of the land necessary for settlement. " They prohibited Indians from entering Puritan towns. Although many Native Americans were mistreated there were some who were treated very well by the Quakers, whom were pacifists.
