Middle School Confessions: A Study of Adolescence
Watching the video Middle School Confessions, I found it to be very informative in learning about teenagers going through adolescence and what can affect a person's personality. Many things such as parents, peer groups, and other things can determine how a person reacts in certain situations, or how they go about daily routines. During the period of adolescence, teens go about many changes (physical and emotional) they feel unsure and/or scared of going through. In this time of change, they look for comfort through their peers. They often discuss the changes they are going through and hope that they aren't the only ones experiencing the "problems" they are facing. During adolescence, many teens feel that this is the time they should begin breaking away from parents and make adult decisions. This is usually around the same time they begin experimenting with drugs, alcohol, and sexual activity. While attempting to break free of parental guidance, adolescents still want the attention of parents. Lack of attention often results in disobedient and violent behavior, and experimenting with drugs and alcohol, as seen in the situations (in the video) with Casey and Jessie. Casey's lack of at
They can give a teen whose parents aren't there, the attention they desire. An adolescent can at times be considered a teacher and can help in an adolescent's moral decisions, as seen in the cases with Jessie and Orlando in the video. Peer groups, parents, role models, and personal experiences all have an effect on your personality and should become very supportive of an adolescents needs and decisions, but also make sure they are the right choices to be made, because this time period is what determines the type of person they are going to become forever. During adolescence, many teens may become uncomfortable with the physical changes they're undergoing and may try a number of things to hide them. When I was in middle school, many of the girls I knew would try to wear jackets and baggy clothing to mask these changes, some would see themselves as becoming fat and begin to eat lightly or not at all (anorexia). A person may feel as though no one understands them, no one loves or cares about them, and that their existence is pointless. That should be enough information to keep parents aware of any strange behavior by their children. I now have a better understanding of myself and become aware of the sudden changes my brother (11) will soon go about. This is may be considered a stage of depression. The school counselor (after Orlando having to repeat the 8th grade and watch his peers move on without him) convinced him to attend summer school and stop skipping class. All past and present experiences, what an adolescent's peers think, and what their parents think, have an effect on their moral development. They see this as their becoming a man and use this to try to develop relationships with older females, as the females that have learned to accept their bodily changes, attempt to start relationships with men. As in the case with Orlando, the guidance counselor's constant checking upon him and being calm with him in every situation, helped him listen and discuss why he cut class. " Depression is considered to be a genetic disorder, and should be discussed with teens if anyone (mainly parents) in their family has been depressed. Whether or not their parents and peers accept this phase of sexual confusion, may decide if they think this is a good or bad thing.
