             Lets Play Monopoly; Go Straight to Jail
             As readers of the English language, we often find ourselves analyzing the texts of professional writers. Many a thought can always be had after reading any text, but essays especially. While reading Croissant's essay Can This Campus Be Bought? Commercial Influence in Unfamiliar Places, many of these thoughts came to mind. Are our institutions influenced too much by the support (or lack thereof) of big commercial industries? Are our institutions made to feel forced to buy into a company in fear of losing monies? Aren't we (large institutions) creating monopolies when we support one large company over another? The answers to all of these questions can easily be found if one chooses to properly analyze Croissant's text. In her essay, Jennifer Croissant focuses mainly on the situation between the University of Arizona and the Pepsi and Nike corporations. When it all comes down to it, large companies and large institutions are always going to work hand in hand, but we as consumers must keep in touch with reality. For, if we don't monopolies will be formed and the United States economy will falter.
             The first discussion that comes about in Croissant's essay appears in her
             introduction...the price increase. "When Pepsi received the vending contract for the University of Arizona in 1998, we soda consumers at the university expected a discount, given the likely volume of purchasing among the 35,000 people on our campus. Instead, we got a price increase, and decreased shelf and fountain space in campus stores and cafeterias." It seems to me that there was never a promise made to students or faculty for a price decrease; that was simply a wonderland dream. When companies come to campus or anywhere else for that matter the price is always subject to change. Almost anywhere Pepsi products cost more than those produced by Coca-Cola, so the idea that Pepsi go...
