Art work

Art Work Last Thursday I went to the Dallas Museum of Arts in Dallas, downtown. I saw many things, but there was one art work that just caught my eyes. It was the kneeling female figure with child and vessels. It is made by the Kongo people of the Zaire region in the 19th-20th century. The art work is made out of wood and kaolin. It's an African art work. It's of an ancestress, that was presumably the mother of the clan and as the white color signifies that she is dead but she still supports her clan which is portrayed by the child in the figure. It is very finely carved and you can see the facial features very clearly. It was frontal, static and very naturalistic. By frontal I mean that you can see all the features of the mother and the child and the position they are sitting is very naturalistic. The faces are well defined and the teeth and the mouth are protruding

On the other hand the color of the reliquary figure is brown as of wood and the brass or copper color. The mother is wearing some sort of bangles in the hand which is supporting the child and that is the only jewelry she is wearing. The texture of the figure looked smooth and the features as I mentioned earlier are not so exaggerated. The mother is totally white from the Kaolin used but the child is not. The thing I really loved about this work is that the white color is associated with death the white color of the mother suggests that she is dead but still she is there to support her clan and help them in ways which the human eye cannot see. What makes this figure so important is that the mother is the founding ancestress of the clan. The figure itself is not so stylized I would say as some of the other figures I saw there. They are sitting on a wooden base and the mother has some black markings on the chest. The color of the two is also very different. The mother and the child are white in color with some variations of brown which is of the child. The mother and the child are a very unique figure as the figure was made carefully but the artist could not show the details possibly due to the lack of precision tools. The mother had an elongated head but the child had a small head. In the other figure though the face is rather abstract but you can imagine where the eyes and the nose are. The elongated head of the mother tells us that the artist wanted us to know that she was very wise and helped the people of her clan in judging the difficult matters of the living world.
