Glaciers: their journey from beginning to end
Presently, 10% of land area is covered with glaciers, but during the last ice age, glaciers covered 32% of the total land area. Glacierized areas today cover over 15,000,000 square kilometers. They store about 75% of the world's freshwater and in the United States alone, glaciers cover over 75,000 square kilometers, with most of the glaciers located in Alaska. If all land ice melted, sea level would rise approximately 70 meters worldwide. That would drown New Orleans, but don't count on that happening any time soon.Most of the world's glaciers are found near the Poles, but glaciers exist on all of the world's continents, even Africa. Australia doesn't have any glaciers; however, it is considered part of Oceania, which includes several Pacific island chains and the large islands of Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. Both of these islands have glaciersGlaciers require very specific climatic conditions. Most are found in regions of high snowfall in winter and cool temperatures in summer. This dense glacial ice usually looks somewhat bluer than the less dense glacial ice before compression. The main growing season for glaciers is during the ice ages. Although glaciers today are retreating due to lower than normal global temperatures, we are in a larger and broader ice age that led to an extensive glaciation in large high latitude land masses like Eurasia and North America. What we have to worry about is the shorter intervals of the ice age, which today is having higher than normal temperatures. The amount of precipitation, whether in the form of snowfall, freezing rain, avalanches, or wind-drifted snow, is important to glacier survival. Whether this is due to a predictable climate trend or because of increased human impacts on global climate, it remains to be determined. In 1953, it raced more than 12 kilometers in three months, averaging about 112 meters per day. If we could retrieve the valuable ozone layer, we can retrieve the beautiful glaciers that have been part of this world as long as the world has existed. Today we are in a retreating interval of time, where global temperatures are warmer than normal, and glaciers are retreating and decreasing in size and quantity. At the end of a glaciers life, warmer and dryer climates are necessary for the retreat of the glacier. The pressure created from the overlying snow compacts the underlying layers, and the snow grains become larger ice crystals randomly located in connected air spaces. Throughout advance and retreat, glacial debris (till) is shoved in all directions. As large glaciers retreat, the underlying ground surface is typically scoured of most materials, leaving only scars on the underlying surface. As compression continues and the ice crystals grow, the air spaces in the layers decrease, becoming small and isolated.
