NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 2004
Elfriede Jelinek is one of those 10 women who received a Nobel Prize in Literature with 90% male domination in this state. She is one of the most influential contemporary writers. A feminist Austrian novelist, she has been writing on female sexuality, its abuse and the war of sexes in general. According to Jelinek, power and aggression are the driving forces of relationships. Her novel 'Lust' is a pornographic description of sexuality, aggression and abuse. It did not g
Indeed she is a marvelous author who has contributed enormously to the field of literature in various languages and some off her novels like "The Piano Teacher", "Wonderful Wonderful Times" and "Lust" have been translated to other languages like French and English. To put it nicely, she writes prose and plays that are controversial. Rather than the plot itself it is the cold description of moral failures that irritates and haunts you. There is no doubt that her work is pornographic and that she excels at the art to describe inhumanity and violence with remarkable cynicism. But the controversy remains that can a writer whose work had been constantly fighting against heavy criticism be acclaimed as the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature? On the contrary, it can also be argued that every individual has a freedom of expression and although her work has been showered with criticism yet her novels have been the best sellers and are exceptionally enjoyed by non-bias readers. Her works reflect some of the events of her life as in the novel "The Piano Teacher" the father of the leading character, Erika Kohut, dies in a psychiatric institution similar to the death of her father. Her work has also been appreciated with several Literary Prizes and Awards such as "The Young Austrian Culture Week Poetry and Prose Prize (1969)", "The Austrian University Students' Poetry Prize (1969)"and "The Blind War Veterans' Radio Theatre Prize, Berlin (2004)" to name a few.
