Bradford VS. Smith

The Colonization of American began in many different places and in many different ways. John Smith and William Bradford lead the primary focus in World History in the colonization of the America's. Each began in separate and unique spots, each with advantages and disadvantages that would severely influence the tides of each colony. Through the turmoil of the early colonial stages both Smith and Bradford chronicled their exploits in the new world. Though similar in situation and roles, the two accounts differ dramatically. Smith's account reads like a swash bucking

Smith draws to mind swords crossing, and vicious battles with malicious natives, while Bradford makes the gentle reader yearn for a blanket and a cup of warm milk. While Smith sports a hostile, superior tone toward those he relies on for food and indeed his very own survival. They wrote to capture the essence of their experiences. The account intended to lure Englishmen to the America's in search of adventure, and wealth. Neither author presents an objective picture. The account depicts grim and hearty Englishmen, in the face of danger and savagery, persevering through whit and cleverness. He presents a picture of the cowering zealot, cold and miserable. He viciously attacks the "commonwealth" community that established itself at Plymouth, that indeed, his beloved religion would approve fondly of. The following illustrates the poetic lies Smith constantly spun about his train wreck of a colony "And now, the winter approaching, the rivers became so covered with swans, geese, ducks and cranes that we daily feasted with good bread, Virginia peas and diverse short of wild beasts as fat and we could eat them. Compare the two, and most valid historians note that Bradford tone contains a particularly stinginess toward the natives during his first encounters with them. Authors in the 1600's did not turn to their parchment with thoughts of journalistic integrity weighing heavily on their conscience. " Which, historians will explain can be proved far from true, seeing that the James Town colony lost almost half it's number in men that winter. Bradford's account proves far from angelic as well.
