Brave New World

             A glimpse of utopia is the focus of Aldous Huxley's novel, Brave New World. The ideal society is divided into a pre-determined social intellectual caste system with ten world leaders. The aspirations of this technologically advanced society are 'Community, Identity, Stability'. The individuals of the Brave New World are constantly aware of the instances of time and the importance of punctuality. They have no understanding of the complex aspects of aging and know little of the past of their futuristic society. The citizens of Brave New World have been so well hypnotized that they are like wild animals only relying on instinct.
             The time of day and reference to instances of time are details constantly brought to the reader's attention, like a chipmunk's awareness of the seasons. Work is rationed by time:
             'Main Day-shift off duty. Second Day-shift take over.' (pg 29)
             Labour is really industrial in the Brave New World. A goal is set and must be reached in the time period allotted. When citizens do not make the right predictions of time and are late they are upset with themselves:
             'Damn, I'm late,' Bernard said to himself as he first caught sight of Big Henry, the Singery clock. (pg 70)
             Sometimes this disappointment becomes anger, with one's self or towards others:
             'There's the Red Rocket,' said Henry, 'just come in from New York.' Looking at his watch. 'Seven minutes behind time,' he added, and shook his head. 'These Atlantic services- they're really scandalously unpunctual.' (Page 55)
             It is like the frustration a chipmunk feels when winter comes around and not enough nuts have been collected. One aspect of time regularly mentioned is the year, in terms of AF (after Henry Ford).
