"Miss Lonelyhearts" and "White Noise"
The two books reveal personal problems and problems of American society in American writers lessons: Nathaniel West "Miss Lonelyhearts" and Don DeLillo The book "Miss Lonelyhearts" is about the newspaper reporter who writes the agony column where he gives an advice for people who need it. At first it was a joke but when Miss Lonelyhearts faces with real suffering of people he does not want to continue. He does not know what to answer to the people. Miss Lonelyhearts thinks about his life and his attitude toward people. Main character of the "White Noise" is Jack Gladney. He is a narrator and works in university. He has a wife Betty and four kids from previous marriages. This novel I don't see a particular problem that Miss Lonelyhearts and Jack Gladney faced with in the novels, except of their own personal feeling and their inner world. In Miss Lonelyhearts case the problem is that he is empty inside. Lonelyhearts doesn't have any close friends and he has no one to love. Betty loves him but he's escaping from her because he is afraid of responsibility. He lived his life and didn't really think
All his life was in the world separated from reality and that is why it was very hard for him to face with the suffering of others and especially to share people's problems by giving them advices. Author writes: "Americans have dissipated their racial energy in an orgy of stone breaking. Interesting that no one even tries to find out what kind of person Miss Lonelyhearts is inside. Everybody thinks that Miss Lonelyhearts is a successful reporter but no one knows that inside he is empty. Don DeLillo in "White Noise" shows the fear of American society. In their few years they have broken more stones that did centuries of Egyptians. It is impossible to understand the death or the life with the mind but if a person accepts it just as it is, whether it is life or death, he will understand it. Jack's fear makes his life a misery. Both novels imply American society. People cannot be happy if they are afraid of something. They help the world and think that that will help them. Their fear is logical- someday one of them will have to loose either life or wife/husband. At the same time it is ridiculous - why are people afraid of what they never know when will come? Jack or Babette (as well as American or any other society) may die in fifteen years or in fifteen days but their fear wont help them to meet their death with dignity! Their fear only prevents them to feel the beauty of the life in general. And they have done their work hysterically, desperately, almost as if they knew that the stones would some day break them".
