A Moment In Time

It was only the middle of October but I was already thrilled about Christmas being only two in half months away. I could not wait until we got our Christmas tree and the fresh scent of pine filled our house. I was only four, but had already figured out Christmas was my favorite holiday of the year. I loved to wake everyone up early in the morning to go open our gifts, before the sun had even started to peek over the horizon. I would run into each of my brothers' room hitting and shaking them until my persistence paid off and they would drag them selves out of bed, just to make me happy. Being only October, the Christmas rush had not yet begun, so my mom decided to try and beat it and get our shopping done early. One Saturday morning my mom and I went to the mall to shop for my brothers and my dad. We were a store shopping for my brother when I saw a bright yellow advertising sign hanging from the ceiling. The sign was an advertisement for Payless, which was on the opposite end of the mall from where we were. On the sign, there were the coolest slippers I had ever seen. The slippers had Bert and Ernie on them. The left slipper had Bert's head sticking up at the toe and the right slipper had Ernie's head sticking up at t

As soon as I saw these breathtaking shoes I tugged on my mothers' sleeve and pointed at the sign. I went through all the gifts and pulled just mine out from under the tree and put them in a pile next to me. When I got to the second to last gift my eyes were almost teary, but I ripped a small piece of the red wrapping paper that was dotted with green Christmas trees to a box that I recognized. " After she looked at them, she went back to looking for my brother without saying anything except, "That is nice, maybe for Christmas. I sat on the floor with my new slippers on and opened the rest of my gifts, even though I really did not care what I got as long as I had gotten my slippers. I ripped off the rest of the wrapping paper, and all my sadness turned to joy when I pulled the slippers out of the box and put them on. When I got them all out from under the tree I began to open them. After that day they were not as clean as they were when I got them, because I walked around my grandparents farm with them on. There are always fond memories of Christmas and those certain gifts that make a Christmas more memorable. I gave my brother, William, a huge hug and thanked him for getting me them, even though I knew my mom really did. To my surprise my mother agreed and we walked across the mall to Payless. The next two months, until Christmas, dragged on for what seemed like forever, but I made sure my mom remembered those slippers. It did not seem to make any difference to my mom if I cried or not, because she did not do anything to me. Christmas is a fun time of the year, especially when you have a special gift that you want. Without waiting for my parents to get out of bed, I started opening my gifts.
