Migrant Workers in California

During the 1930’s countless farm workers from the region known as the Dust Bowl came to California in search of a better life. Today, California remains one of the ideal spots for migrant workers to find job opportunities and make a living. However, the migrants of California today are very different from the migrants of the 1930’s. The present migrants live under much better conditions and have a great deal of support from their unions and the government. Today’s migrant workers are nothing like the migrants workers of the 1930’s. The migrant workers of the 1930’s were made up of white Americans from the Midwest. On the other hand, today’s migrant workers are mostly made up of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. In 2001 there were 1.1 million Hispanic farm workers in California (California Farm Workers: Employment and Earnings). These workers are found in many different fields of work; some of them work in farms, others work illegally in stores for “under the table wages”, and some go on to start their own businesses such as lawn mowing. The kind of work these migrants do varies a huge amount. One reporter, who was making fun of the work these migrants do, wrote, “Crews of migrant workers have allegedly r

Racism is a very serious problem not only in California, but across the world. They had demonstrations, boycotts, and even went on strike. They encountered a lot of resistance, yet they achieved what they were fighting for. The living conditions for these migrant workers is a lot better than it used to be seventy years ago. One man named Cesar Chavez dedicated his whole life to making the lives of these people better. Some of today's present migrants also live in camps; however, their camps are much cleaner and less crowded than those of the 30's. For example, one article reported:"60 Wal-Mart supermarkets in 21 US states were raided simultaneously by federal agents and 250 cleaners were detained on suspicion of being illegal immigrants. At first he only had three hundred members, but within a few years he had plenty of members. The migrant workers of today have a great deal of support from their unions, the government, and human rights advocates. This Union did many things to try and improve the lives of the migrants. It is outrageous that a large chain like Wal-Mart would do something like this. Nevertheless, not all of the migrants live in these camps. Though they face some opposition by racists and are sometimes exploited by their employers, they have overcome many obstacles over the years and are now more successful than ever before. One article reported on the attack of five Mexican migrant workers.
