Caged Bird Literature Analysis
Cage: A barred room or fenced enclosure for confining prisoners. This definition of a cage represents one of the main problems that Marguerite has in Maya Angelou's autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which is that during the 1930's, society had created barriers that restricted African-Americans from having the same rights as every other American Citizen. The pressures of society cause Maya to feel trapped within her head.
One of the ways society has affected her is by making her feel like she is trapped in a cage. To sum up, A cage can trap people into a society completly because of the color of someone's skin. For example, on graduation day, the speech given by Mr. Another example is when Maya needed a dentist. Edward Donleavy completely shattered Maya's dreams as he talks about how the black community doesn't have a chance of being anything apart from good athletes. Even though blacks were "equal," there was always some barrier that prevented people from achieving their goals and dreams. Dentist Lincoln would not help because she was black. Prejudice can make a person create a cage and essentially, Maya caged themselves in a world all her own with little way out. This left Maya feeling trapped within a world that could always limit her even if she worked harder than anyone else. For example, the south during the 1930's portayed prejudice as a natural part of life, now, prejudice is a less sensitive issue. In this novel, Maya Angelou is undoubtedly affected by how she is treated during this time. This shows the views of the the white population and how they looked down upon everyone else. rent view toward African-American's than we do today. This shows that Maya really has no options and is turned away just because of the color of her skin.
