Diaspora

The life in America seems fabulous. The hearsay has attracted many of my friends and relatives, who wasted no time doing what the others did. In 2003, the renowned DV-Lottery brought a tremendous quake in the cities of Nepal, especially the capital. It was a great surprise to know that around three lakh Nepalese citizens filled the form. This very fact clearly depicts the craze of the Nepalese citizens to migrate to the land they metaphorically call a dreamland. Hundreds of billboards could be seen in the streets of Kathmandu.

Some of these people did try to persuade me with the allurements so-called bright future ‘guarantee’, that is, if one gets to be lucky. They dream of ample opportunities and enough earnings to return back home to spent prosperous lives. Additionally, they can always justify this escapism with the country's growing violence, unemployment growth and precarious future. I, for one, strongly oppose the idea on several grounds.

. . .
Even the alert rural people traveled to cities to try their luck. Exporting human resources would certainly give a hard blow to country's development in the long run. We have not yet begun to imagine the inevitable consequences that will come about as we continually let our youth, the ‘vanguards of change’, slip through our hands. merica a dreamland? Is there everything for free? Or don't we have to slug hard? Or, does America distribute resources for free? Have any luck seekers given a serious thought before filling up a form or migrating to America? What is the cost to Nepal in terms of time, resources and energy as it drains away such productive human resources? A significant ethical question lies in front of America as well – should it not bear any liabilities for the cost a least developed country, like Nepal, bears in producing such productive human resources that it taps so conveniently? Even if the selection process is completely impartial as we are led to believe, we, nevertheless, must not miss out on the concern over such a drain on this side of the globe. From our side, this whole ‘phenomenon’ is shameful, pitiful and disastrous. The major portion of this “investment” is met through foreign aid money and taxpayers’ pockets. We should focus more on developing our nation despite the hindrances present rather than pursue a selfishness-inspired life beyond the seas. Moreover, we, the common intellectual mass, should realize that our country needs us. Is the loss of nationality the least that can happen? Even if it is, I would say that is a far heavy price that one might have to pay in return of the unmade promise that one wishes to see fulfilled in America. All it needs is qualified, English spoken and productive populace.

The government should come up with concrete plans and policies to engage the available resources within the country itself. Therefore, I insist that it is high time for Nepal to make a serious thought about the draining of productive human resources from the country. It is completely surprising to know that the well placed ones like engineers, doctors, government employees and other professionals too had flocked to fill the forms.

Development activities would come to a standstill due to the lack of qualified human resources as they act as pillars to nation's development. There has already been a great loss through the ongoing civil war and draining labor to the Gulf and India.
