The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

             Metaphor Essay
"The Lottery", a short story, by Shirley Jackson, has become a metaphoric representation of my life, or life in general. I've thought about this story often after reading it. I even told it to a few people. It made me reflect on my own selfishness in relation to the society around me. It's symbolism regarding how we just accept tradition without question, even to the point of murder, is a brilliant idea. This made me realize, although I'm not proud of it, that even I have acted selfish. I thought of the times that I have caused someone else pain so that I would not have to suffer. Tessie (Mrs. Hutchinson) herself started out with these same emotions until she finds that she has won the lottery, and then she represents the horror
