Georgia O

Georgia was born to a prosperous farming family in Sun Prairie Wisconsin, 1887. After high school she enrolled in classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, and two years later she attended the Art Students’ League in New York City. Georgia studied with the American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. O’Keeffe was however repelled by the rigid academicism of her art instruction, and in 1909 she abandoned her studies to work as a commercial artist in Chicago.

Dow’s teachings convinced Georgia that there were modes of expression more satisfying than academic realism. The painter denied any symbolism to that effect and believed it to be the viewer’s interpretation. Her adoption of a more representational style in later works resulted in a betrayal of that promise. The color appears to invade her body as it blends with and over the pastel figure.

Nevertheless, few dispute the wide appeal of Georgia O’Keeffe’s skillfully executed canvases. The back drop of color and the woman actually become one.

It has been said that Georgia has symbolically implied sexuality in her flower paintings. She often painted particular sections of the landscape in close-up as she had done with flowers.

Georgia discovered the visual interest of bleached animal bones often found in the desert and began using them as subjects for paintings, leading some to suggest that her work had become morbid. There is rhythmic movement of the oblong cloud forms, as they become smaller in the background making them appear to be moving and fading out of sight.
