The ills of American Public School
Henry and Kozol are two very different writers with very different perspectives on education, but in all there differences they manage to both get across the same message that American education system is failing the students. They major difference in these two men is how they think we should go about fixing our massive educational problems.Henry takes an elitist view on this subject. He believes the way to fix America's educational problems is to start people on different paths early in there schooling careers. Say a child is a good with working with wood, Send the child to a school for carpenters instead of him wasting away in a school where he might not do as well and waste people time and money. “The U. S. Department of Labor states that more then 30% of collage graduates are in fields not requiring a degree.(Henry 136)” Which means that money spend by and on these students was wasted because the return for sending he/she to collage was minimal. “Statistics of the Department of Commerce says that 63% of American high school graduates go on to some from of higher education as oppose to 10 to 15% in other first world . . .
Riverdale library has full working computers and a collection of over 8000 books for the students. S 79 in south Bronx serving poorer children and P. If the seniors perform below the state required grades the school will face financial cut backs or closing. S 261 Kozol tell us he that the capacity for the school is 900 students. Secondly he wants to know what community is being served. They both know that there are problems in our educational system but I tend to agree more with Kozol. ” Also there was a big discrepancy in the three school Libraries. (kozol 114)” Both 24 and 261 server mostly minority students. S 79 who serves 1550 students in a building meant for just 1000. If the goal is for all students to go on to collage and that's the teachers goal to then it seems the more apt to let them slid on the little things such as grammar, simple arithmetic, etc. (139)" He believes in doing these two things it will get America back up to par with the rest of the western world. Education sets you free it opens doors and possibly that you probably wouldn't have seen if u weren't and everyone deserves that right. S 261 has a minimal number and 79 has from what Kozol saw roughly 800 tossed in a cubically. (136)" He purposes a massive overhaul of higher education in America by doing two things.
