Huck finn appearence Vs. reality

             Mark Twain's novel, Huckleberry Finn, is an in depth tale of a young boy facing many moral and life altering decisions as he befriends a runaway slave. In this novel, the topic of appearance versus reality is clearly addressed upon.
             Early on in the novel, Huck is taken away by his drunken father, who repetitively beats him. Huck knows that he cannot stay here, so he sets up an elaborate plot to get free. He starts by sawing one of the logs off part of the cabin. Then he finds an old abandoned canoe and steals it. After having a way out and a way to get away, he stages his own death. That way he makes sure that pa wont come looking for him. So, he makes it out safely and goes to the river where he escapes safely, and leaves everybody else to believe he's faced his death. This event in the story shows how appearance vs. reality is present in Huck's experiences. The appearance to the situation is that Huck has been murdered. Everyone in town is horrified with the case of his murder. However, in the reality of the situation, he is actually on a raft floating safely down the Mississippi river.
             Another example that can be portrayed as appearance vs. reality is Jim. In the novel, Huck was raised to believe that all blacks were bad. So, of course, in first meeting Jim, because of his outward appearance, he saw him as an unfeeling and unloving creature, that couldn't even be fully classified as a human. But, as the story went on, Huck played a mean trick on Jim. The two of them got separated in a fog, and when they were reunited he lied to Jim and told him it had all been a bad dream. Jim, catching Huck in a lie, was deeply offended and Huck for the first time saw that blacks too had feelings. He then found himself apologizing to a black man for the first time.
