A Life Lesson
My mom always told me if you are doing something wrong it comes and bite you right back. That Saturday morning it went in one ear and out of the other after she go through lecturing me after finding out my cousin was pulled over by the cops with out la license or insurance. A smirk came across my face as I tried to keep from smiling. My cousin called me with excitement in his voice as if he'd just won the lotto." Man there's a big party tonight everybody is going to be there." I shrugged my shoulders when I suddenly remembered my mom had told me she was going out with my dad that night. Right then I knew I wouldn't be able to go anywhere. Thinking fast the light bulb in my head lit vibrantly when I thought of the perfect way to sneak out of the house. "Oh ok I'll just leave the house after my parents leave and make it back just in time to clean the kitchen. They won't even know I was gone," I explained enthusiastically. When 7:30 came around my parents gave me the usual talk. Close the blinds, lock the door, and call if I need anything by the way which I never did.
That Sunday morning just didn't feel right, I waited up for a phone call from my cousin telling me who was all at the party and what happened. "Jay was shot six times last night at a stop light, they took his car and left him there. Six times my cousin was shot, some how I felt those six shots also. His voice was frail and cold it was quiet for a minute then he came out with it. Yet there was silence, the type of silence where you can hear the drum beating in your heart. After doing what my mom told me to do I walked out side locking the door behind me. That morning I skipped the morning service of church to go to the hospital. I called my cousin back and told him I was on my way, I smiled mischievously as I threw on my black t-shirt and my heavily starched blue jean shorts. " Those words were like knives piercing my heart, it was just too much to bare I broke down and cried asking God why did this have to happen, why couldn't it have been me, why, why ? Three days later the doctors got every thing under control, and a week after that he was back at home. To my surprise it began to rain and from a distance I saw my parents coming back to the house. As for me I'm doing fine and plan on attending a university this fall. I never thought less than three weeks later I would be writing a paper on how my life has changed, but the things I used to do I don't do anymore. I scrambled back into the house so they would not see me. Time stopped and my blood froze in my veins, so clod tears could not flow from my eyes, my heady dropped in disbelief. At some point in life you have to realize that life is much easier if you set your goals high and aim for the stars instead of doing things you are not suppose to.
