HAMLET: Play vs. Movie
Have you heard about Hamlet? Have you seen it in a production? Which performance do you prefer - in a stage play or in a movie?Shakespeare's Hamlet is a tragic drama about the need to revenge a murder in the family. It is one of the most problematic texts in all of literature, which stimulates thought-provoking conversations forcing us to come to grips with many things about the content. I first encountered Hamlet when I was 14 years old during my third year high school back in the Philippines but it was not given so much emphasis that I get to understand its story only until now that I am 18 years old and in grade 12 here in Canada. Weird but true!I really must admit that I actually did not like reading anything about Shakespeare because I knew he was so hard to understand and that it took me a lot of going-over the Hamlet book to truly understand it. How about when it is being performed? Surely, I will be very delighted to watch it. Seeing the play is much different than just reading it.My task here is to share my opinion of which is much better, the play or the movie Hamlet. In real life situation, I prefer watching theatre plays rather than movies because for me theatres or stage plays capture the depth an
It was easier to see how Hamlet was charged with seeking revenge and actually achieved justice. As I watched, I went over the text and realized that the scenes were rearranged, most long speeches were cut, some characters' lines were given to another, and there was more eavesdropping of one character over another. There were a lot of lines being deleted to intensify the state of rage in the scene. I got confused with the difference in scene sequence between the text and the film. So maybe, we could say that she really committed suicide. This movie's approach was more appropriate than that of the text where Hamlet lifts up the arras and sees Polonius only after Hamlet accused his mother "as kill a king". At the beginning of the film, there was an added funeral scene, which I think is much better than Horatio-and-guards-encountering-the-ghost scene in the book that was been removed. Moreover, there were a lot of deleted lines for Ophelia during her "madness" scene so as to make Ophelia more like crazy. Also in the video, Hamlet had always knew he was being spied upon by the king, such as the time when Hamlet was focused then diverting to his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern who came to report to the King after the arrival of the players, and the time when Claudius and Polonius together with Ophelia planned of eavesdropping. In contrast, a play has limited scenes due to time that it takes to change one scene to another and a restricted space for it is held on stage, and the characters' expressions are difficult to recognize when they act and appear at the same time. The scenes were edited to make the story go smoothly and some speeches were relocated to synchronize with the scenario. But it amazed me on how the video had shortened the plot yet intensified the action.
